Samuel James Alexander Jones, 26, of Elwy Meadows, Lower Denbigh Road, St Asaph has been sentenced to 12 months after pleading guilty to criminal damage.

Officer were attending after reports of a domestic disturbance during the early hours of April 9. Jones, carrying a pickaxe, approached the livered Vauxhall Astra. The officers ordered Jones to put the pickaxe down but he refused and raised it above his head as he approached the car. He hit the bonnet and side several times with the weapon, causing significant damage.

One of the officers, who has 15 years’ service, said “Never before in my life, let alone my Police career, have I feared for my life and that of my colleagues. I firmly believe that we have been extremely lucky to have escaped this situation unscathed. Jones showed no regard for our safety, we were his target and he wanted to seriously hurt us or kill us.”

Rich Eccles, North Wales Police Federation Secretary said “We welcome this this sentence and hope that it sends out a strong message that attacks on police officers will always be unacceptable.”
