Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority |
Officers criminally injured may be entitled to compensation from the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).Claims for compensation can be made either online at www.gov.uk/government/organisations/criminal-injuries-compensation-authority or by telephoning the CICA on 0300 003 3601. Lines are open 08.30 to 17.00 weekdays except Wednesdays, when they are open 10.00 to 17.00. It is important when making the claim, you have all the relevant information with you. Please read the Can I apply? section of the website, which will help you decide whether you are eligible for compensation, before you start.Should you wish the Federation to act as your representative, it is important that you advise the CICA when registering the claim so that they will forward a copy of the paperwork to the Federation Office in order that we can keep a progress of your claim.Your injury should be immediately reported via the Think Right website and to the Department for Work and Pensions via Form BI100a. PLEASE SEE BELOW INFORMATION RECEIVED FROM SLATER & GORDON LAWYERS.‘We have recently become aware that the CICA have on occasions informed Police Officers who were assaulted that they will not have a claim as they were injured on duty.In each case the officer was telephoning the CICA to make a claim and as a result of that “advice” took the matter no further.
The suggestion seems to be that anybody (although usually Police Officers) assaulted performing their normal duties cannot claim. That is not correct if the Officer was assaulted. The scheme says that if you are the victim of a crime of violence you can apply. It also says if taking an exceptional risk in say apprehending a suspect then if that was part of their normal duties their application will fail. This was the same under the previous scheme so nothing has changed except that in the last scheme it was in the guidelines, now its in the scheme. So if you have say an MIB ramming case the client will still have a CICA claim as well (if it needs pursuing).’ Important – Please read below JBB Circular in respect of CICA Claims
